BLACK ROOTS BIAS: MEMORIES OF THE SANT SEBASTIÃO OF VÁRZEA AFRO-DESCENDANT COMMUNITY

CASSIANO SUHRE DA ROSA PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION

The project Black Roots Bias: Memories of the Sant Sebastião of Várzea  Afro-Descendant Community aims to re-establish the memories connections between generations of the black population in the community, from the photography, as well as providing through this exhibition a reflection on the importance of Afro-descendant families in the history of this locality, in the Sant Joaquim town, part of the upland region of the Sant Catarina state.

In the state of Sant Catarina, great part of its population belongs to black ethinicity. However, the historical-cultural-social memory of this people still depends on the time’s knowledge, in other words, there are few data on the cultural characteristics and ramifications of the paths of Afro-descendant families, especially in the countryside cities communities, in many areas of Sant Catarina, particularly in the upland region.

The preservation of the history and memory through photography, is one of the most important tools in the cultural record. The construction of narratives through images has become more accessible with technology, however, it is noticed that many communities do not have knowledge regarding preservation care, neither have they had access in the past, for, consequently, the perpetuation of historical records. With that, this project uses photography as a documental process, understanding photography as the potent materialization of memory. Every story is important and deserves to be told and remembered faithfully, although, the identification of the lack of visual records exposes the reality that countless stories have been erased over time.

Reconnect the origins and collectively celebrate historical journeys, which owes a lot to the black population, is the goal of this project, especially with young black people who continue to build their stories in the community. An important legacy that forms part of the memorial and cultural identity heritage of Sant Joaquim-SC.
